SVP Credit Underwriter

Job Summary

This is a hands-on leadership position responsible for managing incoming credit requests, prioritizing workflow, assigning underwriting projects across the team, and personally handling complex credit analyses when appropriate.


The ideal candidate must have a strong background as a Commercial Credit Analyst/Underwriter as well as demonstrated experience directly managing or leading a team of Credit Analysts. This is not intended for someone making their first move into management.


The position will support complex commercial relationships across C&I, CRE, construction, and other commercial lending areas while ensuring consistent underwriting quality, timely completion of credit requests, and development of the analyst team.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Manage and provide day-to-day leadership to a team of Commercial Credit Analysts. 
  • Receive incoming credit and underwriting requests and determine priorities based on complexity, deadlines, and business needs. 
  • Assign and delegate credit requests across the analyst team while actively monitoring workload and turnaround times. 
  • Personally underwrite or assist with complex and larger commercial credit relationships as needed. 
  • Review analysts’ completed work, Credit Approval Memorandums, financial analysis, and underwriting recommendations for accuracy and quality. 
  • Coach, train, and develop Credit Analysts to strengthen underwriting capabilities and overall performance. 
  • Lead due diligence and underwriting for complex C&I and commercial credit relationships. 
  • Analyze C&I and CRE credits, including industrial, multifamily, office, retail, and construction transactions. 
  • Analyze and spread business and personal financial statements, tax returns, and other borrower financial information. 
  • Perform global cash flow analysis and evaluate borrower and guarantor repayment capacity. 
  • Evaluate proposed deal structures and recommend appropriate loan terms, covenants, collateral requirements, and risk mitigants. 
  • Assess collateral, including commercial real estate, inventory, accounts receivable, and other tangible assets. 
  • Review appraisals, project budgets, leases, borrowing bases, and other supporting credit documentation. 
  • Identify credit and documentation policy exceptions and recommend appropriate solutions. 
  • Assign appropriate loan risk ratings and identify potential changes in credit quality. 
  • Lead preparation of credit presentations and communicate recommendations to Relationship Managers, Approving Officers, and other decision-makers. 
  • Partner with Relationship Managers on complex transactions and participate in customer meetings when appropriate. 
  • Review annual financial statements, covenant compliance, borrowing bases, and annual credit reviews. 
  • Support ACL analysis, credit stress testing, loan reviews, audits, and regulatory examinations. 
  • Ensure underwriting assignments are completed accurately and within established deadlines. 
  • Maintain strong and consistent commercial credit standards across the analyst team.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Significant prior experience as a Commercial Credit Analyst, Senior Credit Analyst, Commercial Underwriter, or similar commercial credit professional required. 
  • Prior experience directly managing or leading a team of Credit Analysts required. 
  • Candidates must have demonstrated experience both performing commercial credit analysis/underwriting and leading analysts. 
  • Strong commercial underwriting experience, particularly with C&I and CRE transactions. 
  • Experience underwriting complex and larger commercial credit relationships. 
  • Strong understanding of global cash flow, financial statement analysis, tax return analysis, collateral analysis, and loan structuring. 
  • Experience with CRE sectors including multifamily, industrial, office, retail, and/or construction. 
  • Strong understanding of commercial loan covenants, risk ratings, policy exceptions, and credit approval processes. 
  • Experience reviewing the work of other analysts and providing feedback on Credit Approval Memorandums. 
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and distribute a high volume of credit requests across a team. 
  • Strong leadership, coaching, delegation, and performance-management skills. 
  • Ability to communicate credit recommendations effectively to lenders, senior management, and credit approvers. 
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and decision-making skills. 
  • Banking experience required. 
  • Must be comfortable working onsite.
