Portfolio Manager & Underwriter

Job Summary

The Portfolio Manager & Commercial Underwriting Officer is responsible for analyzing credit data and financial information of individuals and companies applying for loans or credit. The role involves determining the risk level associated with potential lending opportunities and preparing comprehensive reports to support decision-making regarding lending and credit-worthiness. The individual in this position will also provide guidance on loan policies and procedures, ensuring the overall quality and integrity of the Bank’s lending portfolio, with a focus on Commercial Real Estate (CRE) and Commercial & Industrial (C&I) loans.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Conduct detailed analysis of complex lending transactions and provide interpretations for new and existing credit facilities. 
  • Analyze financial data to assess the current and future financial performance of applicants. 
  • Review loan applications, collecting and analyzing necessary financial data to assess the customer’s risk profile. 
  • Prepare in-depth credit analyses, including financial statement spreads, repayment analysis, collateral evaluation, risk rating assessments, and identification of loan exceptions. 
  • Identify problem loans, recommend assignment to the “watch loan list,” and suggest upgrades or downgrades in the existing portfolio. 
  • Review the analysis prepared by other department members for quality control, ensuring compliance with the bank’s credit policies and procedures. 
  • Manage assigned loan portfolios, monitoring maturities, delinquencies, renewals, conversions (e.g., from lines of credit to permanent loans), and disbursements (e.g., CD Loans, Construction Loans, Commercial Loans, Letters of Credit). 
  • Discuss maturing loans and problem loans with the Chief Credit Officer and senior lending officers, making recommendations on future credit information needs. 
  • Coordinate with the Credit Administration Officer to ensure proper review of the loan portfolio per bank policies and procedures. 
  • Ensure that loan portfolios are accurately risk-rated and align with the bank’s lending guidelines. 
  • Interact with relationship managers, brokers, and customers to develop credit requests to be presented to the loan committee and for final approval. 
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for the Board of Directors, providing insight into portfolio performance and risk management. 
  • Assist in the Portfolio Purchases process, including monitoring pending information, reviewing external reports for potential sellers, executing contracts, and overseeing the final closing of transactions. 
  • Establish and maintain databases for future forecasting, loan portfolio evaluation, Portfolio Stress Testing, and concentration monitoring. 
  • Systematically examine loan files for adequacy of credit and collateral documentation, regulatory compliance, and conformity to bank policies. 
  • Collaborate with external auditors to address any deficiencies identified in audits and ensure corrections are made. 
  • Provide support to the Chief Credit Officer with special projects as assigned. 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Proven experience in commercial lending with a strong background in Commercial Real Estate (CRE) and Commercial & Industrial (C&I) loans. 
  • In-depth knowledge of credit analysis, financial statement interpretation, risk rating, and collateral evaluation. 
  • Strong understanding of credit policies, loan documentation, and regulatory compliance standards. 
  • Ability to analyze complex financial data and make sound lending decisions based on risk assessments. 
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with relationship managers, brokers, clients, and senior leadership. 
  • Experience in managing loan portfolios and ensuring compliance with internal policies and procedures. 
  • Strong attention to detail, with the ability to identify problem loans and recommend solutions to mitigate risk. 
  • Proficient in using credit analysis software, loan management systems, and Microsoft Office Suite. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, Business, or a related field (or equivalent experience). An MBA or other advanced certifications are a plus. 
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in commercial underwriting, portfolio management, or a related financial services role, with a focus on CRE and C&I.
